GTS Environmental is an environmental consultancy born out of Glass Technology Services. We have a strong track record of environmental and sustainability projects carried out for private companies and organisations such as Yorkshire Forward,Recycling Action Yorkshire, WRAP and the Carbon Trust.
We also operate an UKAS and Mcert accredited emmission testing service for more details of this please click here.
Our team of consultants and technologists cover many disciplines and include Climate Change, Energy, Waste Management, Environmental Management Systems
and Air Pollution to name but a few. In addition to this we have in house facilities for both laboratory and on site analysis and pilot scale glass manufacturing and testing. Our history working with the glass industry gives GTS Environmental particular competence in the environmental issues associated with the glass supply chain, waste stream and recycling.
Our assistance could take the form of simple advice on environmental and sustainability issues or we could become involved in larger collaborative projects involving local universities and possibly funding agencies in wide ranging environmental studies. Further examples of services we provide can be found on our flyer.
Recent Projects
An idea of the nature of some of our recent projects can be found below, where reports are available in the public domain further details can be found on the Projects page.
- The development of a manufacturing process to produce masonry units from recovered TV and computer screens. Currently, a start-up company is developing technology to bring the process to the commercial market. This will provide local employment and consume recovered glass that would otherwise go to landfill.
- Managing a WRAP project which is light weighting food and beverage containers, by designing out excessive packaging. This process involves managing the whole supply chain from food/drink producers, through to retail.
- The development and process improvement of a small-scale manufacturing facility to produce drinking ware from recycled bottles. Our consultants audited the existing process and identified process improvements which have improved the profitability of the business.
- We are conducting a technical feasibility study into setting up a centre that would support SMEs to produce products from recycled glass and generate employment. GTS is now identifying equipment specification and procuring these specialist items.
- Glass Market Development Assessments for the English Regions and the Devolved Administrations. This study gave an overview of the UK supply chain for recycled glass by looking at the estimated arisings of different glass types, current collections levels, and existing and potential markets in each region.
- Development of a novel method to finish steel castings using recycled glass. GTS is now helping to develop the method which will increase performance and productivity. This will increase business and the market share of this company.
- Creation of a Specification and Good practise Guide for the Supply of recycled materials to Flat Glass Manufacturers. This project included the development of a cullet specification and good practise guide for flat glass back into flat remelting.
- CONGLASSCRETE in conjunction with University of Sheffield, GTS investigated the use of waste glass in concrete products including finely ground waste glass as an additive material in cement manufacture.
- A market survey of applications and manufacturing processes of foam glass. BRE and GTS investigated the use of waste material to generate a building product or high value lightweight aggregate for insulation purposes.
