Monday 24 July 2006

Hosted by Glass Technology Services ( GTS), British Glass, WRAP and Faraday Packaging at the British Glass offices in Sheffield, the Glass Container Lightweighting Conference on 16 June 2006 reviewed the work carried out to date in the WRAP-directed programme of lightweighting container designs at source.

The project's objective is to reduce the weight per unit in order to reduce the amount of waste container glass going to landfill.

The conference was well represented with delegates coming from the glass container industry, large retailers, food companies, research bodies, universities, drinks companies and other associated bodies.

Presentations were made by GTS, WRAP and Faraday and covered the overview and outcomes of the original Container Lite project, the current status of the four newly entitled GlassRite projects - wine, food, spirits and beers - and the impacts of colour control. A visitor from Canada provided an interactive presentation on sensor technology.

"Great interest has resulted from conference, and many of the companies who attended the day have demonstrated interest in further participation," said Dave Dalton, General Manager of GTS, "so the outlook for the projects and future partnerships is looking very promising."
