Sustainable glass packaging series

Join us for a series of online training sessions on how to make your glass packaging more sustainable.

  • Discover emerging trends, navigate key regulatory pressures, and learn from glass sustainability experts.
  • Understand how to avoid greenwashing through credible, data-driven claims, and explore practical strategies like right weighting and shape optimisation.
  • Gain insights into the long-term sustainability advantages of glass over plastic and master tools like Life Cycle Assessments to communicate your environmental impact effectively.

Agenda for the series:

SESSION 1: Navigating the current landscape and future opportunities – Martyn Marshall
Tuesday 24th June, 1pm-2pm BST (Teams online event)

  • What is happening today? Pressure to reduce glass weight (EU PPWR and UK EPR)
  • Examples of sustainability pioneers
  • The need to avoid greenwashing – make sure sustainability claims are credible
  • Outlook on sustainability in packaging (next 10–20 years)
  • Long-term opportunities (closed-loop recycling, glass factories powered by renewable energy)
  • Glass vs. plastic (long-term sustainability comparisons)

SESSION 2: Practical strategies for sustainable glass design – Daniel Capon & Mukerrem Er
Tuesday 1st July, 1pm-2pm BST (Teams online event)

  • Design choices and sustainability challenges (rightweighting, shape optimisation)
  • Managing challenges of lightweighting (fragility, logistics)
  • Balancing aesthetics with sustainable design (trade-offs between branding and environmental impact)
  • Maximising recycled cullet use (impact colour choices have on recyclability)
  • Environmentally-conscious materials and technologies (advanced coatings, standardisation)

SESSION 3: Measuring the impact of sustainable improvements – Chris Holcroft
Tuesday 8th July, 1pm-2pm BST (Teams online event)

  • Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for glass packaging
  • How to quantify environmental improvements (carbon footprint, energy savings, recycled content)
  • Transparent reporting and communication of sustainability claims
  • Practical examples of measuring packaging improvements (weight reduction, cullet content)
  • Using credible data to avoid greenwashing and support sustainability storytelling
